Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface has suffered a devastating setback, ruling him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to injury.
This unfortunate development comes after Leicester City’s midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was already ruled out, leaving the three-time African champions without one of Europe’s most prolific goal scorers.
Expressing his disappointment, Boniface, who sustained a groin injury, shared his sentiments on his X account, revealing the timing of the setback just days before the AFCON. The young talent, known for his goal-scoring prowess, wished the Super Eagles the best of luck in the tournament but lamented the unfortunate twist of fate.
The injury forced Boniface to miss the team’s pre-AFCON game against Guinea, resulting in a 2-0 loss for Nigeria. The forward is slated to return to Germany for medical treatment, with an estimated recovery period of about six weeks.
As Nigeria’s Head Coach Jose Peseiro grapples with the absence of key players, he is expected to make a replacement call-up for the 23-year-old just days before the AFCON kicks off.
