Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to a group of influential figures for their pivotal roles in securing his release from detention in the Benin Republic.
In a statement posted on his Instagram account titled “My Release in Benin Republic,” Igboho extended his appreciation to several individuals who played instrumental roles in ensuring his freedom. He began by acknowledging the divine intervention, expressing his gratitude to God Almighty for making his release possible.
The statement further read, “I give special thanks to President Talon of Benin Republic and all members of his cabinet for their cooperation and support throughout this challenging ordeal. I am deeply indebted to my heroic father, Professor Banji Akintoye, and the esteemed Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, for their unwavering support in our collective struggle for the Yoruba nation. Your courageous stance and commitment to our cause have not gone unnoticed. You stood by me during my time in Benin Republic, and you have faithfully fulfilled your promises.”
Sunday Igboho also took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and Baba Ayo Adebanjo in his release. He humbly recognized that ultimate freedom comes from the divine, while expressing his heartfelt gratitude to all religious leaders, pastors, Muslim clerics, and traditional worshippers who fervently prayed for his release day and night.
It is worth noting that Sunday Igboho was arrested on July 19, 2021, at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) while on his way to Germany. His departure from Nigeria followed a contentious raid on his residence in Soka, Ibadan, by the Department of State Service (DSS), which accused him of illegal arms possession.
