Amnesty International Nigeria demands a transparent coroner’s inquest on the 103 EndSARS protesters, urging a halt to mass burials.
A leaked memo to the Lagos State Ministry of Health approved N61, 285,000 for the mass burial of 103 2020 EndSARS victims. The Lagos State Government denied the victims were from the Lekki Tollgate shooting, while Permanent Secretary Dr. Olusegun Ogboye emphasised they were from violence after the protests.
Amnesty International Nigeria Director Isa Sanusi urges Nigerian authorities to halt secret mass burial plans and conduct independent investigations into EndSARS victims’ deaths. The group calls for transparent coroner inquests, autopsies, and public disclosure of identities and circumstances.
The Lagos State Government has not mentioned holding 103 #EndSARS victims since October 2020. Sanusi calls for immediate release and justice for victims and their families.
The organisation has been monitoring developments since the protests began. Amnesty International confirmed in October 2020 that Nigerian security forces opened fire on peaceful protesters calling for good governance and an end to police brutality. Pro-government supporters instigated violence, providing cover for the police’s use of lethal force. A Judicial Panel of Inquiry indicted the military and police for killing unarmed protesters.
