Osita Chidoka, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, has blasted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its handling of the previous presidential election.
Chidoka criticised INEC’s inability to send election results electronically in real-time.
He made the remarks while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
“INEC is a colossal shame. As a Nigerian, I am embarrassed to be linked with INEC.
“I appeared on this programme and called for third-party verification of the INEC system so that we can be certain that what happens on election day will not result in a glitch.” On election day, INEC reported a malfunction.
“Despite not having tested the system, it is unfortunate that INEC went to court to argue that failure to comply with its regulations does not constitute grounds for cancelling an election,” Chidoka added.
He went on to say that INEC’s problem with such an issue reflects poorly on the country, and he questioned why it couldn’t follow countries like India and Indonesia, which have enormous populations but run better elections.
According to Foxiz Nigeria, the PDP and Labour Party, LP, have challenged Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.
They petitioned the court to overturn Tinubu’s victory because INEC failed to transmit results in real time to the election portal.
However, the court has since declared that INEC is free to transmit results in whatever method it sees fit.
