Eight deaths were confirmed after a petrol-laden tanker spilt its contents along the Ore-Benin Expressway in Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ondo State reported eight deaths in an explosion caused by a white fuel tanker with no registration number. The explosion resulted from overspending, and many were reported to have died. Son-Allah reported that nearby village residents swarmed the scene after a tanker exploded, killing eight people who were scooping fuel.
The FRSC boss confirmed that the tanker and motor boy escaped unharmed and that the remains of the victims were deposited at the General Hospital in Ore. This is the latest in Nigeria’s frequent petrol tanker explosions, which often occur when residents attempt to syphon off oil or petrol from pipelines or when tanker drivers crash on poorly maintained roads.
In June 2021, a tanker explosion in Lagos resulted in five deaths and 13 injuries. In April 2022, a fuel tanker overturned, spilt its contents, and caught fire in Benue State, causing 12 deaths and dozens of house burns. In January, a tanker explosion in Agbor claimed four lives and injured 11.
