The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation exercise is set to resume in Borno State 13 years after being suspended due to Boko Haram attacks.
The NYSC announced on Twitter that prospective corps members deployed to the second stream of the Batch ‘B’ orientation course will need to reprint their call-up letters and report on the dates printed on their call-up letters.
The course will commence on August 18th, 2023.
The suspension of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) operations in Borno state, Nigeria, was primarily driven by the precarious security situation prevailing in the region.
Borno state has been a focal point of the Boko Haram insurgency, a militant extremist group that has inflicted significant violence and instability in the north-eastern part of the country.
The safety of corps members, who are young graduates deployed to various states for a year of national service, became a paramount concern in this hostile environment.
The decision to suspend NYSC operations in Borno was not taken lightly. The Nigerian government, in coordination with security agencies and NYSC officials, likely made the call to safeguard the lives and well-being of the corps members.
The region’s vulnerability to insurgent attacks, kidnappings, and other security threats necessitated this preventive measure. Ensuring the safety of the participants is a top priority, and operating in an area with such high levels of insecurity posed an undue risk to their lives.
