The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) orders union members to work twice a week due to rising petrol prices.
Union President Smart Olugbeko announced union members cannot survive on the current minimum wage and will not return to full work until the federal government agrees to a 200 percent salary increase.
The National Union leadership agreed to direct members to work two days a week until the Federal Government agreed to a 200 percent salary increase. The hike in petrol prices resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies has worsened inflation and impoverished Nigerians. Workers, including those at colleges, have remained loyal to the government, believing it will be temporary.
The Union leadership is facing complaints from members about the high cost of transportation due to the rising price of petrol, which is causing them to lose hope and struggle to find work.
The Union issued a directive 24 hours after petrol prices at fuel stations, including NNPCL, hit N617, affecting Nigeria’s fuel supply.
