Independent National Electoral Commission has suspended the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, and has instructed him to avoid the state office for declaring the All Progressives Congress candidate, Aisha Dahiru, as the winner in the supplementary election. The commission banned the REC from the office in a letter signed by the Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have demanded the prosecution of Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari over his controversial actions as Binani was trailing Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP who had a 31,249 votes before the announcement.
The All Progressives Congress candidate, Aisha Dahiru has filed a lawsuit requesting to stop INEC from declaring the winner of the election until her court case is resolved. This is coming after Yunusa-Ari had announced Binani as the winner during the collation of results, causing confusion in the state and across the country.
Fintiri who won with 421,524 votes, but was not declared the winner due to canceled votes in 69 polling units ahead of Binani who had 390,275 votes. Opposition parties and ex-INEC commissioners criticized Yunusa-Ari’s actions, reflecting the anomalies in the elections. However, INEC nullified the pronouncement and summoned the REC to Abuja. The REC and colleagues couldn’t attend a committee in Abuja due to the aviation strike, which affected their return flights. Senior INEC officials returning via road from rerun polls in different states are expected at INEC headquarters in Abuja today.
