The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has issued a plea to the federal government at all levels to intensify efforts in addressing the escalating security challenges across the nation. This call was made in a communique released and signed by NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, following the forum’s Standing Committee Meeting held in Enugu over the weekend.
The guild commended the recent release of students from LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, describing it as a positive development. It extended congratulations to the Office of the National Security Adviser, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, and security agencies for their roles in securing the students’ release after three weeks in kidnappers’ captivity.
Regarding the abduction of Segun Olatunji from his Lagos residence by individuals dressed in military uniform, the guild demanded the immediate release of the editor. It emphasized that any media publication suspected to be false should be subject to legal scrutiny.
The editors condemned the manner in which the editor was kidnapped, stating that such actions have no place in a democracy, especially under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has consistently promised to uphold the rule of law. The guild stressed the importance of allowing the media to operate freely in holding government accountable.
Expressing concern over the recent ambush and killing of 17 military personnel in the Okuama community, Delta State, and the alleged military retaliation, the guild urged the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the incident to prevent future occurrences and bring perpetrators to justice.
Acknowledging the rising cost of living in the country, attributed to the worsening security situation, removal of petrol subsidy, and devaluation of the Naira, the editors called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to implement measures to stabilize the currency value effectively.
Recognizing government initiatives to alleviate hardship through various palliatives and intervention schemes, the guild emphasized the importance of ensuring these measures have a long-term positive impact on citizens’ lives.
The NGE commended the resilience of the mass media amidst challenging economic conditions and urged journalists to continue performing their duties with professionalism and nationalism. In light of security challenges, the media was encouraged to report responsibly without inadvertently providing incentives to terrorists or bandits.
