The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed its intention to utilize direct primaries for the selection of its candidate in the forthcoming Edo governorship election on September 21. This announcement was made by Duro Meseko, the APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, during a media briefing on Tuesday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. The decision is a culmination of resolutions reached at the National Working Committee (NWC) consultative meeting with key stakeholders in Edo.
Mr. Meseko stressed the importance of unity among Edo stakeholders and urged collaboration to reduce the number of aspirants in the race. He encouraged aspirants to adhere to the rules and explore internal party dispute resolution mechanisms rather than resorting to legal actions. The NWC also emphasized strict compliance with financial obligations outlined in the party’s constitution.
To ensure the party’s smooth functioning, the NWC resolved to conduct e-registration for fresh members after the primaries to avoid disruptions. Stakeholders were specifically urged to foster unity within the party ranks, presenting a united front bound by progressive ideals as they approach the upcoming election in Edo.
Former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole highlighted the complexity of democracy based on popular participation, emphasizing the importance of consensus-building, conflict resolution, and respecting the majority’s choice while acknowledging the minority’s voice. Oshiomole expressed the party’s determination to reclaim Edo, attributing past challenges to internal elements within the APC.
Oshiomole commended the efforts of APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, in leading the party. He disclosed ongoing dialogue among the 29 aspirants to foster healthy competition. Dr. Ganduje, in response, outlined his focus on strengthening the party throughout the year, emphasizing improved internal democracy, transparency, and the development of a party ideology to enhance APC’s standing as a robust political institution.
Dr. Ganduje emphasized the importance of party members understanding the APC manifesto, rules, regulations, and philosophy. He called for the adoption of a guided democracy approach, where issues are discussed to limit unnecessary contests and ensure a more focused and united front. The APC national chairman emphasized the significance of internal democracy, transparency, and the need for members to believe in the party’s doctrine to expand its followership.
