Former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola supports integrating voter registers with the National Identification Number (NIN) database to ensure transparency and integrity in elections, putting an end to underage voting and multiple registrations.
Aregbesola made the remarks on Tuesday at the 7th International Conference of the PSSN at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, while presenting the lead paper titled “Towards Free, Fair, and Credible Elections.”
I propose a seamless registration system that syncs with the National Identification Number (NIN). It should be continuous and end a few weeks prior to the election for card compilation and printing. “It can prevent underage and duplicate registrations while allowing individuals to register online independently, like many applications today.” They should only go to the INEC office for data capture and card collection.
The second factor is the delineation of voting constituencies and polling units. This should be population-based. Chaos always ensues on election day as voters scramble to find their polling units. The former governor of Osun suggested implementing a notification system and personal checks to prevent confusion. He also advised INEC to train political parties on specific election roles and ensure the smooth distribution of electoral materials.
