The Presidential Election Petition Court resumes sitting for the adoption of Atiku Abubakar’s written address against President Bola Tinubu’s February 25 election victory.
Atiku, Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, was present in court today. The hearing focuses on adopting arguments before the court, which will either set a date for judgement or reserve it.
Petitioners, including PDP, Atiku, the Labour Party, and Peter Obi, are praying for the nullification of Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 poll. Both parties are praying for the election winner or a rerun. They filed and exchanged their final written addresses, with Tinubu’s reply on July 24.
Peter Obi and the Labour Party called 13 witnesses and closed their case on June 23, while Atiku and the PDP called 27 witnesses and closed their case on June 23. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) closed its case on July 4.
The APC closed its case in two petitions, Atiku and the PDP, and Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shettima and the APC, on July 5. The APC did not call a witness in its defence but tendered court judgements.
The three respondents, INEC, APC, and Tinubu, urged the court to dismiss the petitions, arguing that the petitioners failed to establish their cases with credible evidence.
