The 1.6-mile (2.57 km) long Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday after a container ship hit it. Officers said as many as twenty people could also be in the water.
A stay video posted on YouTube confirmed a ship hitting the bridge, after which several of its spans collapsed into the Patapsco River. Unverified videos posted on social media X additionally confirmed the influence and collapse. Reuters couldn’t instantly confirm the film.

The Baltimore Metropolis Fireplace Division described the collapse as a mass-casualty incident and mentioned employees had been looking for twenty folks within the river.
“We acquired several 911 calls at around 1:30 am, {that a} vessel struck the Key Bridge in Baltimore, inflicting the collapse. That is at the moment a mass casualty incident and we’re looking for seven people who find themselves within the river,” Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fireplace Division instructed Reuters.
The Related Press reported that several automobiles had fallen into the water.
Maersk takes duty
The Dali container vessel that collided on Tuesday with a bridge in Baltimore was chartered by delivery firm Maersk MAERSKB.CO on the time of the accident, the Danish firm mentioned in an announcement.
“We’re horrified by what has occurred in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” Maersk said.
According to a schedule on Maersk’s website, the Dali was set to depart Baltimore early on Tuesday and arrive at Colombo on April 22.
The vessel is owned by Singapore’s Grace Ocean Pte and managed by Synergy Marine Group, by LSEG information.
Police stories on the incident
Baltimore police said they were notified of the incident at 1:35 a.m. ET (535 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Maryland Transportation Authority mentioned in a put-upon X, “All lanes closed in each instruction for the incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Site visitors are being detoured.”
It was not instantly clear if the Baltimore port operations had been impacted because of the bridge collapse.
The port’s personal and public terminals handled 847,158 light-weight vehicles in 2023, probably the most of any US port. According to a Maryland authorities website, the port handles farm and building equipment, sugar, gypsum and coal.
The Baltimore port didn’t instantly reply to Reuters’ request for remark.
“I am conscious of and en route to the incident on the Key Bridge… Emergency personnel are on the scene, and efforts are underway,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said on X.
The bridge, named after Francis Scott Key, opened in 1977 and is valued at an estimated $60.3 million.
