The First election saw Adamawa State governor and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu FintirI and his closest rival, Aishatu Dahiru, of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani in a close gap of about 38,000 votes following the news of results for 13 Adamawa municipal districts and 21 local government areas. Due to this close gap and high number of cancelled vote, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election inconclusive and called for a rerun on April 15, 2023.
The re-run was still smeared with controversies as he Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Adamawa, Hudu Yunusa-Ari prematurely declared APC’s Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani as governorship winner before collation ended. The electoral commission voided the declaration and summoned REC to Abuja. INEC decided to write to the Inspector-General of Police to investigate and prosecute the REC for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari, following matters arising from the Governorship election. The authorities notified the government and the collation process will resume at a later time.
Adamu Gujungu, the replacement for the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari, was present at the collation center in Adamawa.
