In a recent development, a Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced the prominent transgender personality, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison without the option of a fine.
Recall that Bobrisky was convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro on Friday, April 5, 2024, for the abuse and mutilation of Naira notes, following his arrest and arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The sentencing date was scheduled after Bobrisky pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of tampering with N490,000 by spraying, as brought against him by the EFCC.
Justice Awogboro emphasized that the verdict would serve as a deterrent to others who engage in the abuse and mutilation of the Nigerian currency.
However, the judge ordered that the prison term commence on March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
There was a moment of slight drama in the courtroom before the announcement of the sentence when the judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly responded that he was male.
