Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has expressed strong condemnation of the recent viral verbal assault on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by individuals claiming to be soldiers.
The incident, captured in videos, involved persons purportedly from the Nigerian Army verbally attacking the governor for ordering the arrest of an individual, believed to be a soldier, who violated traffic rules.
However, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja clarified that only one of the individuals in the videos was a soldier, and that soldier has been apprehended. The COAS emphasized that the actions of the arrested soldier were contrary to the values of the Nigerian Army, as they violated principles of discipline and the laws of Lagos State.
He further assured that investigations are ongoing, and any personnel found guilty of misconduct will be appropriately dealt with. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja disassociated the Nigerian Army from other individuals seen in comical acts on social media, stating that they are not personnel of the army, as evident from their mode of dressing and political utterances.
The COAS affirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to upholding discipline and professionalism.
