Former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark, has requested that the senators-elect should elect a Southern Christian as the President of the Senate in an open letter to the 109 senators-elect. The request is necessary to rebuild unity that was lost under the last eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari‘s leadership.
The Leader mocked former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for suggesting that the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress aimed to establish Islamic dominance in the Nigerian political sphere for the next two decades. El-Rufai had earlier claimed in a viral video that the ruling party deliberately chose a Muslim-Muslim ticket to secure the presidency. The Elderstatesman reminded those who downplayed the importance of religious balance in politics not to forget the events of the 2014 Constitutional Conference.

Clark urged the 10th Senate to promote unity by appointing a Southern Christian senator as Senate President. It’s just to have Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president and Senator Kashim Shettima as vice president. Both are Muslims, including Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
He also stated that a Muslim Senate President along with a Muslim Speaker of the House would mean all three branches of government are headed by Muslims, which is unacceptable. ” Tinubu planned to be Buhari’s running mate but was rejected for his Muslim-Muslim ticket being unsuitable for Nigeria.” Tinubu nominated Osinbajo for vice president. Clark criticized El-Rufai’s statement on imposing Islam for 20 years as insensitive and arrogant. “He called out El-Rufai for making a divisive statement, which benefits him, and expressed disappointment over his actions given his experience in government since 1999.”
