Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, urges the Department of State Services (DSS) to expedite the investigation into the cases of suspended Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa and suspended CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele. They were suspended by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in June for corruption and abuse of office.
Foxiz Nigeria reported that Emefiele named Bawa as an accomplice in the Naira redesign scam. Femi Falana urged the DSS to arraign them in court with evidence. He claimed that detaining Emefiele and Bawa didn’t adhere to the Criminal Justice Act.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged the government to handle cases in line with the law to prevent the exploitation of loopholes. Investigations should be conducted promptly, especially when allegations are made. “I anticipate no investigation delay for the grave allegation made,” he said. “Regarding Emefiele, the State Security Services accused him of terrorism financing last year.” Please act promptly regarding money laundering and other offences by reporting them to the appropriate government agencies.
Regarding Mr Bawa, the details of his offences remain undisclosed, making it difficult to comment. However, I urge the government or relevant agencies to expedite the investigation and proceed with prosecution if he is charged. Previously, Emefiele implicated traditional rulers, Army generals, and judges as his accomplices. He allegedly disclosed that he provided money to these individuals during his tenure.
