The Federal Government has finalized arrangements to repatriate refugees currently residing in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic back to communities in Borno State, from where they were displaced years ago due to the Boko Haram insurgency.
This initiative was revealed by Aliyu Tijjani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, during a visit to a satellite city established for Boko Haram refugees in Marua, Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Ahmed explained that discussions on the evacuation process took place, and a tripartite meeting involving the commission, the Borno State government, and the UNCHR will be convened to devise the necessary processes and procedures for the evacuation of refugees from Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.
He further announced plans for the development of similar satellite cities across the country with sustainable livelihood sources to facilitate the resettlement of displaced persons.
During the visit to the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Jere Local Government Area, the Federal Commissioner donated food items and relief materials to five hundred households, including victims of fire outbreaks in the camp. Additionally, he visited skills acquisition centers established for the IDPs and the satellite city in Marua, pledging to commence resettlement in the first quarter of 2024.
