The Federal Government increases Federal Government Colleges (FGCs’) school fees from 45,000 to 100,000.
Federal Government Colleges, also known as Unity Schools, are a group of secondary schools in Nigeria owned and operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria. These schools were established with the aim of promoting national unity and fostering integration among students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. The idea is to bring students from different parts of the country together to interact, learn, and grow in a harmonious environment.
A directive from the Federal Ministry of Education’s Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department states that new students are expected to pay ₦100,000 instead of ₦45,000. This circular, signed by Director Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, aims to improve the fees for Federal Unity Colleges.
Some popular Federal Government Colleges in Nigeria include:
- King’s College, Lagos
- Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos
- Federal Government College, Idoani, Ondo State
- Federal Government College, Enugu
- Federal Government Girls’ College, Akure
- Federal Government Girls’ College, Benin City
- Federal Government Girls’ College, Oyo
These schools continue to play a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape of Nigeria and promoting national integration.
The recent fee increase impacts school activities, including tuition, boarding fees, uniforms, textbooks, and insurance, affecting various aspects. The House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to reverse the increase in school fees in federal government-owned secondary schools, following a motion by Saidu Abdullahi and Kama Nkemkanma. The move aimed to alleviate hardship for students.
