Google stopped supporting the original Chromecast after 10 years since its launch in 2013. A notice of cessation has been displayed on various Google support pages. Chromecast support for the first generation has ended. No updates or technical support were provided, and performance may degrade. Chromecast comprehensive Guide.
Support for first-generation Chromecasts ended in April. They may still function, but their functionality will slowly deteriorate as the rest of the ecosystem is updated. The original Chromecast was a small, inexpensive device that let users’ stream video content from their mobile devices or laptops to their TV through an HDMI port. It was priced at $35 and provided an affordable way to access streaming apps on TVs before the widespread adoption of smart TVs.
In the years that followed, Google continued to introduce other Chromecasts, including a 4K model that was released in 2016. However, the latest model, the 2020 Chromecast with Google TV, has added its remote to the equation. Instead of just relying on your phone to feed you content, the streaming device had its interface, which signalled a huge shift in Chromecast’s lineup.
Although the first-generation Chromecast is formally out of support, Google has yet to update this product regularly. According to 9to5Google, the most recent update was released last November, which was the first update for the device in over three years.
