Amidst a whirlwind of social media uproar over a contentious video clip showcasing his greeting customs, Ahmed Musa, the captain of the Tremendous Eagles, has stepped forward to offer his explanation.
He characterized his actions as an expression of cultural reverence while urging a shift in focus towards the pressing issues confronting the nation.
Musa’s statements come in response to a viral video that surfaced online on Monday, depicting him exchanging pleasantries with the Kano State deputy governor while seemingly overlooking Governor Abba Yusuf, although he was bowing to him.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, Musa stated, “I have become aware that a moment captured almost a month ago has suddenly become the center of attention on social media. It is disheartening to see a simple act of cultural respect blown out of proportion.”
Elaborating on the significance behind his actions, the footballer underscored the deeply ingrained traditions of Northern culture.
“In our Northern culture, the act of kneeling, shaking hands, etc., signifies the utmost form of respect. This was my intention when I greeted the deputy governor in such a manner.
“However, when it came to greeting the governor, I chose to bow and not shake his hands, honoring him in a manner deeply rooted in tradition,” he explained.
Ahmed Musa expressed disappointment that the incident has garnered such widespread attention, even from national media outlets, diverting focus from more pressing matters facing the country.
“It is unfortunate that amidst all the pressing issues our country faces – economic hardships, security challenges, religious clashes, and more – this seemingly insignificant moment has garnered so much attention,” he lamented.
The former Leicester City striker added, “What’s even more disheartening are the comments questioning my respectfulness, especially from those who don’t know me personally.”
Musa urged Nigerians to redirect their energy toward finding solutions to the nation’s problems rather than becoming entangled in futile distractions.
“Let’s pause for a moment and reflect on where we choose to direct our energy. Shouldn’t it be towards finding solutions to the problems plaguing our society rather than getting caught up in futile distractions?
“I urge us all to channel our collective efforts toward addressing the real issues at hand. Let’s focus on uplifting each other, fostering unity, and working toward a better future for all,” he concluded.
