Following the conclusion of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Friday, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has called upon candidates who encountered technical difficulties during the exam to remain composed, as arrangements for possible rescheduling are being made.
Professor Ishaq Oloyode, the Registrar of JAMB, made this plea while addressing reporters after overseeing the examination in Kogo-Bwari, Abuja. He assured that, thus far, the UTME has been progressing smoothly, with only one center reported to have experienced issues.
“We urge the public to bear with us. It’s inevitable that some centers may encounter challenges. I’ve been informed of only one center facing issues today,” he said.
“By the end of the day, we anticipate around 10 percent of the centers may experience some form of disruption due to varying levels of infrastructure development across the country. While we do not condone these disruptions, we ask for cooperation in such instances.”
Elaborating on the procedures for rescheduling, Professor Oloyode explained, “When a session is disrupted, affected candidates cannot be accommodated in subsequent sessions. They will need to step aside, and our headquarters must be contacted. The earliest they can be rescheduled will be after 4:30 p.m., ensuring that candidates slated for later sessions can still proceed without interruption. In some cases, rescheduling may even extend to the following day.”
Furthermore, Professor Oloyode expressed reservations about awarding scholarships solely based on UTME performance, emphasizing the need to consider additional criteria for admission.
“While MTN and other entities offer scholarships to top performers, we discourage premature rankings based solely on UTME scores. Admission criteria encompass various factors such as O Level grades, post-UTME scores, and in certain cases, physical assessments for specialized institutions like the NDA,” he elaborated.
The 2024 UTME is currently underway nationwide and will continue tomorrow.
