Pastor Tunde Bakare, a cleric, believes that the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, may have made wrong decisions in managing Nigeria’s monetary policy.
He believes that the provisions of the CBN Act 2007 allow for the possibility that the governor did not act without presidential authorization. Bakare stated this during a State of the Nation address on Sunday.
The cleric argued that events before the 2023 presidential election suggest a political vendetta against Emefiele by President Bola Tinubu. Bakare also criticised the Department of State Services (DSS) for their role in Emefiele’s arrest and detention, stating that their actions raised concerns over professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.
Bakare argued that the current president’s focus on corruption is primarily motivated by the clampdown on perceived political adversaries, while other enemies of Nigeria remain untouched. Emefiele is being prosecuted by the Federal Government on two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
After the court granted bail, the federal government filed an application to appeal against the order. The suspended CBN governor has appealed, seeking to stop the Federal Government from further remanding or prosecuting him on the charges of illegal possession.
The Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned the case until Tuesday, August 15th, for further hearing.
