In a proactive move, officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency initiated the immediate clearance of obstructive shop extensions on Monday. These extensions were impeding the access of large fire trucks to the site of a recent fire incident that engulfed Mandilas Building on Broad Street in the Lagos Island area.
Jubril Gawat, an aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, provided updates on the situation, confirming that the fire had been completely extinguished. Despite this, first responders remain present at the scene, and precautionary measures such as road closures and alternative traffic management strategies are being diligently implemented by officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other relevant agencies.
The devastating fire, which occurred on Sunday, ravaged a warehouse within the 14-storey building, resulting in the destruction of goods worth hundreds of millions. Remarkably, no casualties have been reported thus far.
The recurrence of fire outbreaks in markets across Nigeria, including Ladipo Market and Balogun Market, is unfortunately not a new phenomenon. Over the years, these incidents have been attributed to factors such as electrical surges and substandard market structures, creating conditions conducive to the rapid spread of fire.
In the commercial capital of the country, the tardy response from emergency officials and the lack of adequate firefighting facilities have historically posed challenges in effectively combating fires, particularly in public spaces.
