The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has staunchly refuted allegations aimed at tarnishing her image following the emergence of documents suggesting the disbursement of N585,198,500.00 into a personal account. The minister addressed the matter after a leaked letter dated December 20, 2023, surfaced, revealing instructions she allegedly issued for the payment.
In the leaked letter titled “Mandate for Payment of Grant for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun States Respectively,” Edu purportedly directed the accountant-general to transfer the specified sum to the UBA account of one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.
Despite public outcry and concerns over the alleged financial transaction, Edu took to X to deny any wrongdoing, emphasizing the principles of integrity and accountability under her leadership in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
“Integrity and accountability are our watchwords! Under my watch in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, no one will embezzle Government funds as before. The plans to tarnish the image of this administration, my person, or the Ministry will amount to nothing,” she stated.
The viral document, signed by Edu and directed to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, detailed the minister’s instruction to disburse N585,198,500.00 to a private account. The document further indicated that the payment, labeled as a grant, was intended for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states.
