Neymar Santos Sr., father of Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr., has announced that his family will not be involved in the legal proceedings of convicted former footballer Daniel Alves, as ESPN reported late Thursday.
Neymar Jr. and Alves were teammates at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as for Brazil.
The former Barcelona and Brazilian player was sentenced on February 22 after being found guilty of raping a young woman at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.
The victim, who testified behind a screen to protect her identity, claimed Alves forcibly raped her in a private bathroom of the nightclub despite her pleas to stop, causing her “anguish and terror,” according to prosecutors.
Subsequently, a Barcelona Provincial Court granted Alves bail, which allowed him “provisional release” upon payment of one million euros.
He was also required to surrender his Spanish and Brazilian passports, remain in Spain, and report to the court weekly.
The verdict came a day after his lawyer requested the release of the 40-year-old, arguing that he had already served a quarter of his four-and-a-half-year sentence in pre-trial detention following his arrest in January 2023.
He noted that he had supported Alves before his conviction, which was “unrelated to any legal proceedings.”
However, with the recent developments, “the situation is different from the previous one,” he said.
Neymar Sr. expressed his wishes for Alves to “find all the answers he seeks with his family.”
Learn the total assertion beneath:
“As everyone knows, initially, I assisted Dani Alves without any reference to any legal proceedings. In this current situation, distinct from the previous one, wherein the Spanish courts have already ruled in favour of the conviction, there is speculation and an attempt to associate my name and that of my son with a matter that no longer directly concerns us. I hope that Daniel finds all the answers he seeks with his family. As for us, for my family, the matter is closed.”
In another development, former Brazilian footballer Robinho, aged 40, was instructed on Wednesday to commence his prison sentence “immediately” in Brazil after being convicted in an Italian court for his involvement in the 2013 gang rape of a woman at a Milan nightclub during his time at AC Milan.
On Thursday, his legal team requested the Supreme Court postpone the sentencing decision issued by Brazil’s highest appeals court to allow time to challenge the legality of Robinho’s imminent imprisonment.
However, attorneys representing the former Manchester City and Real Madrid footballer stated on Thursday that they have appealed with the Supreme Court.
