The African Union (AU) is holding a meeting on Monday to discuss the crisis in Niger following President Mohamed Bazoum’s July 26 coup.
The meeting will take place at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and will include AU Commission chief Moussa Faki Mahamat and representatives from Niger and ECOWAS.
Faki expressed concern about the poor conditions of Bazoum’s detention and called his treatment unacceptable.
Niger’s military regime has promised to prosecute Bazoum for “high treason” and criticised ECOWAS for imposing sanctions.
Bazoum and his family have been held at the president’s residence since the coup.
