Anambra Police arrested two suspects for attacking US Consulate officials. The Commissioner of Police confirmed the arrest at a press conference.
Suspects were arrested by joint security forces after a raid on the hideout of the Eastern Security Network and the Indigenous People of Biafra in Ogbaru LGA, but the camp was deserted. The state commissioner of police named the four police officers involved in the attack, along with five staff members from the United State consulate office. The incident occurred on May 16, 2023, when the group was ambushed by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network and the Indigenous People of Biafra in Anambra State.
Police in Anambra State were informed at 2:30 p.m. by a consulate official about the incident. A joint security team was deployed to the area after the incident. They engaged the attackers in a shootout, but they managed to escape through a nearby forest. On May 17, 2023, security forces raided a suspected assailant’s hideout in the Ugwuaneocha community but found it deserted.

Echeng reported that two suspects were arrested and are cooperating with police in investigating the attack that killed seven. Security teams also destroyed the criminal camp. Five US consulate officials and four armed police officers were attacked while on a mission to assess erosion in Ogbaru LGA. The assailants fired at them and set their vehicles on fire.
Seven people, including three consulate officials and four police escorts, were killed in the attack. Two consulate officials are still missing. Five USAID staff and four police officers, including Jefferson Obayuwane (Ret.), were involved in the attack. The Commissioner of Police confirms the recovery of the bodies of DSS personnel (Sunday Prince Ubong, Ekene Nweke, Hassan Etila, and Avwuvie Kaye, Monday). Efforts to rescue missing officials continue. The public is urged to provide information about the culprits.
The Anambra State Police Command offers condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and the USA Consul. The state governor’s press secretary also commented on the tragic incident. Soludo reassured residents and visitors of their commitment to law and order despite the incident, according to Echeng.
