The Osun State Government has revealed plans to establish a Cyber Crime Action Committee aimed at enforcing relevant laws pertaining to cyber crimes, cyberbullying, and combating online misinformation.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Engagement, Kolapo Alimi, issued on Sunday, the initiative is intended to address the proliferation of fake news within the state.
Alimi clarified that “the step became necessary to sanitize the governance space and ensure that politicking and governance occur under an atmosphere of accountability, decency, and honesty.”
The decision comes amidst ongoing social media disputes between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress concerning governance issues in the state.
While acknowledging the negative impact of fake news on both the government and the opposition, the commissioner emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to the law.
He outlined the committee’s composition to include journalists and legal practitioners, with a mandate to enforce relevant sections of the Cybercrime Act of 2015.
The committee’s primary objective is to curb the dissemination of false information, utilizing legal provisions to ensure compliance with the law by all stakeholders.
Alimi further disclosed that the committee’s inaugural meeting is scheduled for Monday, underscoring Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to delivering good governance in the state.
