Umar Faruk Usman, a POS operator in Adamawa State, attempted suicide over a N1.760 debt. He was sued by his friend Mustapha Baraya for criminal misappropriation and breach of trust, violating Section 299 of the penal code of 2018.
Baraya provided N1.960 million for POS business, but Umar misappropriated the entire amount and only refunded N150,000. The complainant attempted to recover the remaining N1.760 million, but Umar and his father continued deceiving him.
The defendant and his father promised to refund money after harvesting a rice farm. However, they secretly harvested the crop without the court’s knowledge, leaving the court with no option but to enforce its judgement and dispose of Umar’s father’s house.
The house was sold for N1.1 million to raise funds for a refund. Dissatisfied with the court’s actions, Usman bought an insecticide bottle and stormed the court. He entered the Chamber of Hon. Shehu Mustapha, emptied the substance, and broke its bottle. He collapsed, vomited, became unconscious, and was rushed to Special Hospital Yola for medical attention.
