The Transmission Firm of Nigeria (TCN) has raised concerns over deliberate attacks on its facilities in Zuba, Gwagwalada area of the Federal Capital Territory, following Thursday’s nationwide grid collapse. Ndidi Mbah, the TCN spokesperson, emphasized the need for heightened vigilance in light of these threats.
Despite ongoing challenges such as persistent low gas supply affecting power generation, TCN remains committed to managing the national grid and ensuring its stability. Mbah highlighted the tireless efforts of TCN grid controllers to balance the grid and prevent disruptions.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government, particularly the Minister of Power, in addressing the root causes of low gas supply, Mbah stressed the importance of consistent gas availability for optimal power generation and effective grid management.
However, Mbah pointed out that low power generation significantly increases grid fragility, citing five vandalism incidents in the first quarter of 2024 alone that disrupted transmission operations. This necessitated emergency repairs, and in some cases, complete tower reconstruction or transmission line replacement due to acts of vandalism.
TCN urged heightened vigilance, particularly in the Zuba area, and implored residents to report any suspicious activities around power facilities to safeguard infrastructure integrity and ensure uninterrupted power supply for all. They also called for cooperation from those living near TCN towers nationwide in safeguarding power transmission infrastructure.
