West Africa Container Terminal (WACT), a subsidiary of APM Terminals, has introduced the opening of a state-of-the-art container freight station at Onne Port, Rivers State. This milestone marks a significant step towards WACT’s strategic goal of becoming the primary gateway to Eastern Nigeria and beyond. The facility promises to offer a comprehensive range of logistics solutions, bolstering efficiency and accessibility for Nigerian businesses.
Established in 2006 as the first greenfield container terminal in Nigeria under a public-private partnership model, WACT has solidified its position as a crucial link to markets beyond Lagos. The new container freight station, nestled within the Oil and Gas Free Zone in Onne Port, is poised to further enhance WACT’s capabilities.
Managing Director of WACT, Jeethu Jose, emphasized the facility’s role as a central hub for diverse industry-related activities, facilitating seamless connectivity between businesses in Eastern Nigeria and the global market. With tailored solutions aimed at expediting the movement of key Nigerian commodities, such as agricultural products and minerals, the station ensures efficient service delivery and streamlined import-export processes.
Moreover, the facility offers reliable warehousing services across various sectors and serves as a convenient one-stop destination for customers to consolidate their exports. Jose highlighted the pivotal role of the station in supporting the Nigerian government’s initiatives to promote exports and foreign exchange generation, thereby contributing to national economic growth.
Ismaila Badjie, WACT Commercial Manager, hailed the station as a pioneering addition to Onne Port, underscoring its cost-effectiveness and time-saving benefits for customers, particularly in non-oil exports. He emphasized the facility’s potential to bolster job creation and facilitate the export of natural produce.
The Customs Area Controller of Port Harcourt II Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, Baba Imam, extended congratulations to WACT for this significant milestone, acknowledging its contributions to the port’s development and operational excellence.
