The Arewa Consultative Forum warns Nigeria and ECOWAS against using military force against Niger’s coup plotters.
The forum condemns the coup and calls for dialogue with the African Union and ECOWAS to restore democratic governance. The forum emphasises that military force won’t guarantee peace and stability in the ECOWAS sub-region.
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is concerned about the unfolding events in Nigeria’s neighbour, the Republic of Niger, and their potential impact on the region. Nigeria and Niger share a long historical border, with many countries in ECOWAS adopting democratic governance structures.
The ACF believes peaceful relations and stability are paramount, and military measures should consider historical antecedents and mutual interests. The military option should not be a prerequisite for Nigeria’s and the Community’s efforts to enthrone democracy in the region in the 21st century.
