Given the removal of fuel subsidies, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Section on Public Interest and Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL, has pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to immediately put in place measures that will mitigate the suffering suffered by Nigerians.
At a news conference in Lagos yesterday, the chairman of the committee, Dr. Monday Ubani, criticized the president’s removal of fuel subsidies and said that Nigerians were groaning with pain and suffering. He said: Although most Nigerians don’t understand the large subsidy scam in the oil sector, there has been a flawed removal process and way of doing it. This has caused grave consequences and is detrimental to the helpless citizens, who are increasingly suffering from these government policies that have not been well considered.

Nigerians are groaning in pain, and the President needs to be informed clearly, especially with the abrupt end of fuel subsidies. The crisis at hand cannot be solved by increasing the salaries of civil servants, whose population is minuscule compared to the millions outside of government employment. “Implement stronger economic plans to soften the impact of policy changes.”The president needs wise guidance to overcome current challenges.”
Ubani praised the President’s move in firing the Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, and urged investigations into the apex bank chief and the aviation ministry. Details on the 2023 NBA-SPIDEL conference were given by Ubani. The theme is “Post-Election Nigeria: The Judiciary in the Eye of the Storm.” The keynote speaker is Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, and former NBA President, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, who will chair the opening session. The guest speaker for the opening ceremony is Justice Amina Augie of the Supreme Court.
Legal experts, governors, and lawmakers will attend the event in Lagos. Dr Ubani urged the President to investigate the former Aviation Minister for the failed Nigeria Air agreement. He suggested investigating if the aircraft for Air Nigeria was a chartered flight from Ethiopian Airlines to deceive Nigerians. The president will form a panel to investigate the aviation scam. This is a test for the new administration and its war on corruption.
