The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned protest on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. NARD President Innocent Orji stated that the protest is ongoing and that he will review it in 72 hours.
The NARD President has eight major demands, including the government recruiting new doctors to replace those who have left the system through migration or death.
Orji emphasised that the lack of the right number of doctors in hospitals affects healthcare service delivery and that no one has proven their claims.
The government has not circularised a guideline on doctor recruitment, despite its claim to reduce brain drain. The Association, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has demanded a 200% salary increase for its members and the replacement of doctors who have left the system.
The suspension of the planned protest follows a meeting between the NARD executive and Senate.
