President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians at 7 p.m. today, urging electronic media outlets to connect to the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria’s network services.
The broadcast is related to the economic pain experienced by Nigerians due to the removal of the petrol subsidy. The price of petrol rose from N500 to over N617 in just two months, causing anger and criticism from economically stranded citizens.
Nigeria’s headline inflation reached 22.79% in June, driven by rising food prices and transportation costs due to the removal of fuel subsidies. The Tinubu administration’s plan to pay 12 million households N8,000 in subsidy palliatives for six months was criticised, leading to a review and a seven-day ultimatum from the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The labour union rejected the new administration’s palliative and threatened a nationwide protest on August 2, 2023, if the government fails to implement it.
