On Saturday, the Taraba governorship election petition tribunal, convened in Jalingo, upheld the victory of Governor Agbu Kefas from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the state’s governor.
The three-member panel, led by Justice Ayo Sunmonu, dismissed the petition lodged by the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and its gubernatorial candidate, Yahaya Sani, citing insufficient evidence as the basis.
Justice Sunmonu, in delivering the verdict, emphasized that the petitioners failed to substantiate their claims.
“The petitioners did not provide adequate evidence to support their argument that the governor was not duly elected, and thus, the petition lacks merit,” he stated.
Mr. Sam Adda, the legal representative for the governor, expressed satisfaction with the judgment, deeming it a significant legal milestone.
The NNPP and its gubernatorial candidate had approached the tribunal with a petition aiming to annul the election, citing alleged irregularities as the primary reason. They also sought the tribunal to order a fresh election in the state, claiming non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, among other grievances.
